Basic Life Support & AED training for dental staff

This CPD course is designed to refresh your basic life support skills and use an AED in a dental setting.

You will also revisit some ailments and conditions that may arise in a dental setting and you will brush up on your skills of recognition and giving treatment or assistance to the patient whilst waiting for the Emergency Services to arrive on scene if required.

This is a practical course with a balance of theory with training scenarios to put your skills into action while getting positive feedback and guidance from an expert healthcare professional.

CPD Course Outline

Dental professionals are required to undertake regular Basic Life Support (BLS) and Automated External Defibrillation (AED) training to maintain their skill set to deal promptly with a medical emergency if a team member or patient became unwell.


This BLS & AED (CPD) course will equip you with the required skills and knowledge to perform CPR and how to use an AED (Defibrillator) safely and confidently in a medical emergency.


You will revisit and update your skills and knowledge to be able to provide treatment and assistance to a casualty who may be suffering from an Epilepsy episode, Anaphylaxis reaction, Asthma attack, Heart attack, or Hypoglycaemic episode.


This CPD course will be a balance of theory and practical skills with several training scenarios to put your learning into practice. Assessments will be carried out throughout the course and feedback be given to encourage you on your learning journey.


CPD course objectives

An understanding of BLS requirements to include.

  • Describe the principles of BLS.
  • Explain when CPR would be performed.
  • Explain why early CPR is necessary.

The learner will be able to.

  • Demonstrate CPR on an Adult & Child.
  • Demonstrate how to use an AED on an Adult & Child also troubleshoot common faults (battery low, Pads out of date).
  • Demonstrate using a CPR mouth shield and inserting an OP airway correctly.
  • Demonstrate how to use a BVM (Bag Valve Mask)
  • Demonstrate how to use oxygen, and describe the flow rate, and masks used.
  • Describe precautions when using oxygen in a confined space.
  • Demonstrate putting the casualty into the recovery position and what monitoring needs to be done.
  • Explain why a breathing casualty should be put into a recovery position.
  • Describe the handover information required for emergency services.

Learners will understand different medical emergencies and how to provide treatment for.

  • Epilepsy

  • SCA (Serious Cardiac Arrest)
  • Hypoglycaemic attack.

Explain special dental requirements including oxygen kits, suction kits, BVM, and required medications.

Certification

Learners who pass all practical assessments will be awarded a CPD certificate of attendance for Dental Basic Life Support (BLS) & AED (defibrillator) training.

The CPD certificate is valid for 12 months from the assessment date.
