Description: This qualification provides the knowledge and skills for first aiders working in early years environments.

Learners will gain the knowledge, skills and understanding of paediatric first aid as outlined by the Department of Education, September 2016.

This is a qualification that indicates an individual can undertake a specific role in the workplace and that may be relied upon by employers.

Paediatric First Aid: 

Paediatric First Aid is an accredited qualification that is nationally recognised and is Ofqual and DofE approved and meets EYFS requirements too, this qualification is ideal first aid course if you work in childcare, or if you who work in an environment with children on site.paediatric first aid

Paediatric First Aid is an intensive 14 hour course that is traditionally delivered over 2 days, this course will give the candidate those essential skills such as how to successfully manage an unconscious casualty safely and competently, also how to give lifesaving resuscitation to a casualty that has stopped breathing, and how to use a defibrillator safely, competently.

Candidates will also learn how best to treat anaphylactic shock, shock, breathing disorders, wounds and bleeding, and many more conditions too.

This qualification is particularly useful where only one first aider may be available, for example, school staff on school trips, or childminders.

Paediatric First Aid course syllabus includes:

Understand the role and responsibilities of a Paediatric First Aider in reference to:

  • Preventing cross infection
  • Importance of recording incidents and actions
  • Using available equipment
  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency

Be able to provide first aid for an Infant or Child who:

  • is unresponsive but breathing normally
  • is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally
  • is choking
  • has external bleeding
  • is suffering from medical shock
  • has injuries to head, neck, or back
  • is suffering from bites, stings, and minor injuries (splinters, cuts, grazes, or bruising)
  • has suspected fracture
  • has a foreign body in eyes, ear, or nose
  • has minor burns or scalds
  • is having a seizure
  • has had an electric shock
  • has sudden poisoning
  • is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • has diabetes
  • has asthma
  • has meningitis
  • has allergic reactions
  • has febrile convulsions

Course Duration:

12 guided learning hours (2 days) with an additional 4 hours self learning.

Course Tests:

Practical observations during your training days and a final multi-choice question paper at the end of your course.

Course Qualification:

Candidates who successfully pass all the practical elements of the course and pass the final  multi-choice paper will be awarded an Ofqual approved QNUK Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid at Work (RQF) 

This is valid for 3 years from the date of the course, you will receive an A4 size certificate and also a wallet/purse size plastic qualification card.

Pre-requisites:

It is recommended that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy and numeracy or equivalent

This qualification is for those over 14 years of age.

Candidates should be physically capable of providing first aid, such as CPR to a casualty on the floor.

Geographical Coverage:

This qualification is available to learners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The Qualification can be delivered in other countries however learners should be aware that the protocols meet current UK guidelines.
