The QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) was developed in collaboration with other AOs and assists employers in meeting their requirements under the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981 (NI 1982).

First Aid at Work Course

First Aid at Work is a great first aid course for people who work in industries with a high accident and risk rate, such as engineering, machinery repair, and construction.

Plus, it is a good choice if your company welcomes members of the public on your site or if you have a large workforce in a low-risk setting.

The First Aid at Work qualification is nationally recognised and widely accepted across the United Kingdom.

It meets current HSE (first aid) and Resuscitation Council UK guidelines, has been accredited by the Qualifications Network UK and is regulated by OFQUAL.

First Aid at Work Course

In this comprehensive three-day, eighteen-hour First Aid at Work course, participants will learn how to recognise and respond to a variety of common workplace injuries and illnesses.

The course will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence you need to perform quality CPR on an unconscious person who is not breathing, use an AED (defibrillator) safely and confidently, manage an unconscious person who is breathing, and monitor them until ambulance crews arrive.

This intensive first aid at work course will provide you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, such as minor burns, scalds, bleeds, and wounds, as well as to provide lifesaving care to a casualty who is choking, having a seizure, has been poisoned, or is in medical shock; people suffering from SCA (sudden cardiac arrest); asthma attacks; drowning, crushing; and much more.

Working together, various companies and awarding organisations developed a first aid course tailored to high-risk industries.

First Aid aid at Work course learning outcomes;

Understand the role and responsibilities of a First Aider in reference to:

  • Preventing cross-infection
  • Importance of recording incidents and actions
  • Using available equipment
  • Assessing the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency

Be able to provide first aid to a casualty who:

  • is unresponsive but breathing normally
  • is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally
  • is wounded and bleeding
  • has external bleeding
  • is suffering from medical shock
  • is having a heart attack
  • is having a stroke
  • has bites or stings
  • has had an electric shock
  • has injuries to eyes, bones, muscles, and joints
  • has chest injury
  • has splinter’s, cuts, grazes, or bruising
  • has minor burns or scalds
  • is having a seizure
  • has sudden poisoning
  • is suffering from anaphylactic shock
  • has diabetes
  • has asthma
  • is suffering the effects of extreme heat or cold

Course Duration

18 guided learning hours (3 days).

Course Tests

Multiple Choice Question Paper.

  • 70% required to pass this part of the course (28 out of 40)

Practical Observations.

  • For this qualification, learners must be able to perform relevant practical tasks on the floor during the summative assessment. 100% pass mark required.

The assessment will take place under examination conditions; i.e. learners will sit at least 1.25 metres apart and will not be allowed to confer during the examination. No books, including dictionaries, will be permitted during the examination.

Course Qualification

Learners who successfully pass all the practical elements of the course and then pass the final multi-choice paper will be awarded an Ofqual-regulated QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) 

This is valid for 3 years from the assessment date of the course.

Each successful delegate will receive:

  • An Ofqual-regulated QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) certificate.
  • An Ofqual-regulated QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) pdf certificate.
  • QNUK plastic qualification card for a wallet or purse.

Course Pre-requisites

This first aid at work qualification is intended for those over the age of 16 who are capable of carrying out the responsibilities of a workplace emergency first aider. Learners aged 14 to 16 can pursue the qualification; however, employers should not rely solely on them to be first aiders.

Due to the language of the assessment, it is recommended that learners have a sufficient command of the English language to understand the assessment and use the recommended assessment methods.

It is recommended that learners have at least Level 2 literacy and numeracy skills, or equivalent.

Learners will be required to demonstrate first aid procedures as they would in the workplace.

This includes performing CPR on a casualty who is on the floor and being physically capable of doing so.

Geographical Coverage

This qualification is available to learners in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The Qualification can be delivered in other countries however learners should be aware that the content was developed in accordance with current UK practice.
