Legal Requirements for – Early Years Providers
Early years providers have a legal requirement to ensure that they have adequate first aid provisions in place for nurseries, childminders, and schools.
Legislation
The most recent Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) came into effect in September 2023 and it sets out the following requirements.
The requirement states at least one person who currently holds a paediatric first aid certificate must be available on the premises at all times when children are on-site, and they must accompany children on school outings.
Childminders and any assistants who might be in sole charge of the children for any length of time must also hold a current 2-day paediatric first aid certificate.
New Paediatric First Aid Legislation
In March 2015 the Government put forward a proposal requiring all newly qualified Early Years Providers to hold a valid Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric First certificate in order to be included in the ratios in early years setting.
This new requirement will come into force 1st September 2016 and settings will be given a three-month ‘grace’ period to complete the Paediatric First Aid training.
Paediatric First Aid Training
Warwickshire First Aid Training offers a QNUK Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF), this is a 2-day course that meets all the requirements for Early Years Providers.
This is available as an on customer site service and also as an open course from our training centre in Rugby.
We also offer QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) which is an ideal qualification if you already have a Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aider who is on your site during opening hours.
