Emergency First Aid for Sport

Emergency First Aid for Sport is a popular first aid course for sports coaches, PE teachers, gym staff, and other related professionals.

In this course, you’ll learn how to perform high-quality CPR on an unconscious, non-breathing individual and understand how to safely and effectively use an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Along with these essential skills, you will also develop expertise in treating minor wounds, grazes, nose bleeds, and splinters.

Additionally, you’ll learn how to manage minor bleeds and effectively treat burns and scalds.

You will also learn how to assist individuals who are choking, having seizures, or experiencing medical shock, spinal injuries, head injuries, soft tissue injuries, or dislocations.

This course is regulated by OFQUAL and accredited by Qualifications Network UK, ensuring that the training adheres to high standards of quality and professionalism.

Emergency First Aid for Sport Learning Outcomes

Understand the role and responsibilities of an emergency first aider in a sports environment:

  • Preventing cross-infection.
  • Importance of recording incidents and actions.
  • Safeguard children and vulnerable people while administering first aid.
  • Using available equipment.
  • Assessing the situation and circumstances to act safely, promptly, and effectively in an emergency.
  • Evaluate and assess a casualty for return-to-play decisions.
  • Safely removing helmets and safety gear for casualty assessment.

Be able to administer and provide first aid to a casualty who:

  • Is unresponsive but breathing normally.
  • Is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally.
  • Is choking.
  • Has external bleeding (minor and life-threatening).
  • Is suffering from medical shock.
  • Has spinal injuries.
  • Has a dislocation.
  • Has a fracture.
  • Has splinters.
  • Has cuts, grazes, and bruising.
  • Has minor burns or scalds.
  • Is having a seizure.
  • Having an anaphylaxis.
  • Has sprain or strain.
  • Has a head injury.
  • Has a spinal injury.

Course Pre-requisites

To undertake this qualification, you need to possess the following prior knowledge, skills, understanding, or qualifications:

  • Candidates must be at least 14 years old to pursue this qualification.
  • Learners aged 14 to 16 can undertake the qualification, but they should not be relied upon by employers as the sole Emergency First Aider.
  • Learners will need to demonstrate first aid procedures in a realistic setting, including performing CPR on a casualty on the floor; therefore, they should be physically capable of doing so.
  • There are no additional prerequisites for this qualification.

Course Duration

8 tutor-guided learning hours.

Course Tests

Multiple-choice question paper.

  • A minimum of 70% required to pass this part of the course (17 out of 24)

Practical Observations.

  • Learners must be able to perform relevant practical tasks on the floor during the summative assessment.
  • A 100% pass mark is required.

The assessment will take place under strict examination conditions, i.e., learners will sit at least 1.25 metres apart and will not be allowed to confer with one another during the examination.

No books, including dictionaries, will be permitted during the examination.

Course Qualification

Learners who complete all practical elements of the course and pass the final multiple-choice exam, consisting of 24 questions, will receive;

  • QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid for Sport (RQF) Paper certificate.
  • QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid for Sport (RQF) PDF certificate.
  • QNUK qualifications card for a wallet or purse.

Course Progression

For learners who are looking to progress further in first aid, the QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) would be a good step.

Geographical Coverage

This qualification is available across the UK and internationally.

Assessors evaluate learners based on the UK Resuscitation Council guidelines.
