Description: This qualification is for those who require additional training in basic life support and the safe use of an AED.

Many attendees are those working in environments with an AED available, such as Gyms and public places like shopping centres and transport hubs.

Responding to Incidents with an AED

The short course, Responding to Incidents with an AED, empowers individuals with the skills to effectively use an AED in emergency first aid situations.

Master how to deliver effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to adults, children, and infants who have stopped breathing. Gain the confidence to safely operate an AED (defibrillator) and tackle common issues like low batteries or expired pads.

Learn to position a casualty into the recovery position, whether they are an adult, child, or infant, and discover techniques to assist someone who is choking.

This OFQUAL-regulated first aid qualification, accredited by Qualifications Network UK, meets the 2025 guidelines set by the Resuscitation Council UK.

Responding to Incidents with an AED learning outcomes

Have the understanding to be able to assess an incident in reference to:

  • Conducting a primary survey of the casualty (adult, child, or infant).
  • Summon appropriate assistance.

Be able to administer and provide first aid to a casualty who:

  • is unresponsive but breathing normally.
  • is unresponsive but NOT breathing normally.
  • is choking.

Be able to:

  • safely use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • use fault-finding techniques to fix common faults that may occur when using an AED.
  • place a casualty into the recovery position.
  • give a handover to emergency services.

Course Pre-requisites

To pursue this qualification, learners must be at least 16 years old.

They will need to demonstrate first aid procedures in a workplace setting, which includes performing CPR on a casualty lying on the floor.

There are no additional requirements for this qualification.

Course Duration

3 guided learning hours (1/2 day)

Course Tests

Multiple-choice question paper.

  • A minimum of 70% required to pass this part of the course (4 out of 6)

Practical Observations.

  • Learners must be able to perform relevant practical tasks on the floor during the summative assessment.
  • A 100% pass mark is required.

The assessment will take place under examination conditions, i.e., students will sit at least 1.25 metres apart and will not be allowed to confer with one another during the examination.

No books, including dictionaries, will be permitted during the examination.

Course Qualification

Learners who complete all of the practical elements of the course and pass the multiple-choice question paper will be awarded.

QNUK Level 3 Award in Responding to Incidents with an AED (RQF).

This qualification is valid for 1 year from the course assessment date.

Learners will receive:

  • QNUK Level 3 Award in Responding to Incidents with an AED (RQF) paper certificate.
  • QNUK Level 3 Award in Responding to Incidents with an AED (RQF) PDF certificate.
  • QNUK qualification card for a wallet or purse.

Course Progression

Learners undertaking this qualification may wish to progress to QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF) or QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF)

Geographical Coverage

This qualification is available to learners in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

The qualification can be delivered in other countries; however, learners should be aware that the content was developed in accordance with current UK practice.
